In 2021, from the Syria-Turkey border all the way to the UK, The Walk will bring together celebrated artists, major cultural institutions, community groups and humanitarian organisations to create one of the most innovative and adventurous public artworks ever attempted
At the heart of The Walk is Little Amal, a 3.5-metre-tall puppet of a young refugee girl, created by the acclaimed Handspring Puppet Company. Representing all displaced children, many separated from their families, Little Amal will travel over 8,000km embodying the urgent message “Don’t forget about us”.
Amal arrives in Deptford at 10am where she will walk from the top of the high street, next to the anchor down to Giffin Square. Along the way she will be welcomed with a chance to wash her clothes with plenty of bubbles and a procession by school children. After this, she will arrive at Giffin Square where there will be music, more bubbles and information stands including Deptford X and the Refugee Café, plus a working Ferris Wheel. After a short break Amal will accept gifts at 11am from the school children and she’ll to meet and greet everyone, before we all wave her goodbye at 11.45am, as she leaves for her next destination. The Ferris Wheel will be on the square all day & will be free to ride from 4pm.
